Since the outbreak of the civil war in Syria and rise of jihadist militant groups in Syria and Iraq, images of war crimes committed by the various parties involved in the ongoing conflict have emerged. The terrorist organisation ‘Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham’ (ISIS) in particular employs the strategy to commit crimes against humanity and propagate them, in order to instil fear in friend and foe. For this terrorist group, the end justifies the use of any means. This is also true for the treatment and use of minors in ISIS-held territory.
