Jihadism on the Rise in Europe: The Dutch Perspective
The director-general of the AIVD, Rob Bertholee, addressed a Policy Forum at The Washington Institute on the sudden and explosive renewal of jihadism in the Netherlands.
As of the beginning of 2013, the AIVD noticed a number of Dutch jihadists leaving for Syria. A number that increased rapidly. Presently, the AIVD estimates 160 Dutch jihadists in the Syria/Iraq area. Within the jihadist movement in The Netherlands the AIVD acknowledges a few hundred potential participants and several thousands of sympatizers.
The Washington Institute seeks to advance a balanced and realistic understanding of American interests in the Middle East and to promote the policies the secure them.
