If there are adjustments in the Criminal Records System of someone in a position involving confidentiality, for example because that person has been convicted for a serious offence, the Security Screening Unit (Unit Veiligheidsonderzoeken, UVO) automatically receives a report of this.
Similarly, if the General Intelligence and Security Service (Algemene Inlichtingen- en Veiligheidsdienst, AIVD) or the Military Intelligence and Security Service (Militaire Inlichtingen- en Veiligheidsdienst, MIVD) receives new information regarding activities of an official in a position involving confidentiality that are anti-democratic or dangerous to the state, this is automatically reported to the UVO. This is called the Automatic Alert System.
An automatic alert could be cause to initiate a new security screening, even if it is not yet required according to the regular repeat term (after five years or a multiple of this). The result of this could be that the certificate of no objection (Verklaring van geen bezwaar, VGB) or clearance is withdrawn.
